This is my fourth year of spring outings with kids. Here's what I've learned:

Mosquito repellent: apply before leaving home. Choose child-safe products.

Sun protection: wide-brimmed hat with strap. Sunscreen SPF 30+, reapply every two hours.

Clothing: the "one more layer" rule. Spring weather is unpredictable.

Snacks: bring exactly what you'll need, plus a little extra. Water bottle, cut fruit, rice balls or sandwiches, crackers. Avoid chocolate.

Emergency kit: band-aids, antiseptic wipes, anti-itch cream, spare mask. Pare it down.

The golden rule: unpack before you pack. Ask yourself if you actually need each item. Half the things we bring are "just in case" and never get used.

I've cut my backpack weight by 40%. My shoulders thank me.
