A lot of my friends over forty deal with the same issue: a partner who speaks harshly and has a quick temper. But they won't leave β€” kids, house, decades of habit.

The real question: since we're not leaving, how do we make this less painful?

First, figure out WHY they're harsh. Have they always been like this? Then it's how they grew up communicating. Did it start recently? Then something is weighing on them β€” stress, health, midlife anxiety.

In the moment: don't fight back. Pause. Say "I'm feeling emotional. Let me take a moment and we'll talk after." You're not surrendering β€” you're taking control.

Useful phrases: "I heard what you said, but the way you said it stung. Can you rephrase that?" "We're both worked up. Let's take a breather."

The most important thing: talk about your feelings when you're NOT fighting. Find a calm moment and say "I want to talk about something. Not to fight. I just want you to know how I feel."

Midlife marriage isn't about being in love every moment. It's about being able to sit at the same table and work things through when times are hard.
