When I went for an orthopedic check-up and mentioned my son is four, the doctor just wrote a referral. Here are the injuries I've accumulated.
One: rotator cuff. The most common mom injury. Lifting a 10+ kg kid into the crib, car seat, off the swing β multiple times daily. Tips: alternate sides, reduce lifting after 15 kg, do shoulder stretches daily.
Two: lumbar disc herniation. Basically standard equipment for parents. Bending to put on shoes, wash hair, pick up toys. The spine absorbs several times the perceived force. Tips: squat instead of bend, teach the child to dress themselves from age two, use a lumbar pillow.
Three: wrist tenosynovitis (mommy thumb). From the repetitive gripping motion of holding and lifting. Tips: use both hands, avoid ulnar deviation, wear a wrist splint at night.
These are real workplace injuries. Just the workplace is your home, and the boss is a four-year-old.
