There was a period when I was in a really bad state. I forced myself to go out for lunch. After passing the small park near my office, my afternoon was noticeably different.

This has a name: the 20-Minute Park Effect. A 2023 study found that 20 minutes in a park — walking or just sitting — significantly reduced stress and improved mood.

Three reasons: cortisol drops (the stress hormone physically decreases), brain attention recharges (nature triggers a different mode), and dopamine/serotonin go up.

Twenty minutes is the sweet spot — stress hormone decline is most pronounced in the first 20 minutes.

You don't need a forest. Even a few street trees help.

I now go out for lunch every day, walk through the park, and come back. Sometimes I find the thing I was stuck on suddenly has a direction.

Tip: skip the headphones. Let your ears take a walk too.
