Every parent knows this: kid hasn't gone number two in days, grandparents suggest yogurt. "The probiotics will help!"
I bought various yogurts β imported, Greek, ones with added bifidobacterium. Results were mixed.
Here's what I found: the probiotics in yogurt can theoretically regulate gut flora. But the number of live bacteria that survive stomach acid is very limited. Also, many flavored yogurts are loaded with sugar, which can worsen gut health.
What actually helps: plain water consistently throughout the day. Fiber-rich foods β dragon fruit, prunes, kiwis are particularly effective. Regular toilet time β sit for five minutes after breakfast daily.
Yogurt is fine as a snack β one small cup (100-150ml) per day. But don't treat it as a cure-all. Once I figured this out, I relaxed. Upped his water and vegetables, and within a few days things sorted themselves out.
