My son held his poop for three days at kindergarten. Three days.
I only found out when he came home uncomfortable and I asked enough questions to piece it together. He didn't want to use the school bathroom. No particular reason β he just didn't want to.
I asked around and apparently this is a classic boy thing. Girls, from what I hear, are more likely to just go when they need to. But boys β especially younger ones β can get so absorbed in whatever they're doing that "holding it" becomes the path of least resistance.
For days I tried reasoning with him. "The school bathroom is clean, I promise." "Your teacher said it's fine." "You'll get a stomachache if you keep holding it." None of it worked.
Then I switched tactics. I stopped nagging and started making it a game. "Let's see if you can be the first one to use the bathroom at school tomorrow!" And we practiced at home β the whole "raise your hand and ask the teacher" routine.
The next day, he did it. He came home proud as a peacock, announcing, "I went poop at school!"
I learned two things from this: boys often just need a different approach than girls β more playful, less pressure. And sometimes you have to stop projecting your own bathroom anxieties onto a four-year-old.
