My 6-year-old looked up from his coloring book and asked the question I'd been dreading: "Mommy, if AI can do everything, why do I have to go to school?"

He'd heard me talking about AI with a friend β€” how it can write essays, solve math problems, create art, even code. He put it together and arrived at a logical conclusion: if a machine can do all that, why do humans need to learn those skills?

I didn't have a good answer on the spot. I fumbled through something about "learning how to learn" and "you don't know what you'll need yet." He seemed satisfied, but I wasn't.

So I thought about it more seriously. Here's what I came up with:

Reason 1: AI knows how to do things, but it doesn't know why they matter.

AI can write a moving poem about heartbreak, but it has never felt heartbreak. It can draft a scientific paper, but it cannot feel the wonder of discovery. The "whys" β€” purpose, meaning, passion β€” are fundamentally human.

Reason 2: You can't direct something you don't understand.

The people who use AI best will be those who understand the domain. An AI can write code, but you need to understand programming to know what to ask it to build. An AI can draw, but you need artistic vision to guide it.

Reason 3: The world changes, but human skills stay.

AI might replace certain jobs, but it won't replace curiosity, resilience, empathy, or creativity. Those are skills you develop through struggle β€” through failing a math test and trying again, through a group project where you learn to collaborate, through reading a book that changes how you see the world.

What I ended up telling my son:

"AI is like a super-powered tool. But even the best tool is useless if you don't know what to build. School is where you learn what you want to build."

He seemed to accept that. Then he asked if AI could finish his homework. Nice try, kid.

But I'm glad he asked. It means he's already thinking about the world differently than I did at his age. And maybe that's exactly what he needs.
