I remember buying school accident insurance at kindergarten β€” the whole class signed up together, a few dozen yuan, just a signature.

I signed it without a second thought, barely looking.

Later, when my child bumped his head at kindergarten and I wanted to claim, I pulled out the policy and realized I had no idea how the reimbursement worked or where the cap was. I was genuinely lost for a moment.

After researching, I finally understood it β€” and I'll explain it for the parents who, like me, are looking at this seriously for the first time.

Its full name is Student Comprehensive Safety Insurance. It's government-promoted and quasi-charitable, which is why the price is kept so low and profit isn't the main goal β€” that's the fundamental difference from commercial insurance.

It mainly covers: medical costs from accidents at school or on the way to and from school; accidental death and disability payouts; and usually a school-liability rider β€” which protects the school, not the child directly, but if a child is injured at school because of management issues, parents can claim through this channel. Some products also add a hospitalization allowance β€” a small daily payment while hospitalized.

The biggest gap versus commercial insurance is the coverage cap. School accident insurance typically reimburses only a few thousand yuan for accident medical costs, with accidental death payouts around 100,000 β€” low price, low ceiling. Commercial children's accident insurance lets you choose the coverage; a few hundred yuan buys coverage of hundreds of thousands or more.

One detail many parents miss: some school policies require you to claim through national medical insurance first, then use the policy for the remainder β€” it doesn't pay the full amount directly. In other words, what you actually pocket may be less than you expected.

So is it worth buying? Of course. At that price, not buying it is just leaving money on the table. It's a basic safety net β€” for minor accidents it covers part of the medical costs, and having it beats not having it.

But if you want fuller protection, school accident insurance alone isn't enough. Add a commercial children's accident policy β€” two or three hundred yuan a year buys high coverage. Use them together: small incidents go to the school policy, big ones get caught by the commercial one. That's what feels solid.

That's how I set it up afterward. The form I signed casually β€” now I finally know what it was for.
