I opened the door to pick up my delivery and there he was: tall, blonde, blue-eyed, straight out of a movie.
For a second, I was genuinely stunned. My brain short-circuited. All I could think was, "Did I accidentally order from a modeling agency instead of a restaurant?"
He handed over the food in perfect, accent-free Mandarin: "Your order, ma'am. Please rate me five stars."
I blinked. "Wait β you're Chinese?"
He smiled. "Yeah, I'm from Xinjiang."
That's when it clicked. Xinjiang β a region in northwest China where many people of Central Asian descent naturally have lighter features. He wasn't a foreigner working part-time as a delivery guy. He was as Chinese as I was.
I felt a little embarrassed for my assumption. But also kind of amazed. What a wonderful thing, that China can produce faces like his β faces that make you question your own stereotypes without saying a word.
I gave him five stars. And a big tip.
