China's transport network may be the most advanced and efficient in the world. But if you don't know how to use it, even the best system won't save you.
Metro β Tap and Go
Fifty-four Chinese cities have metro systems. Foreigners can buy metro tickets or passes with their passports. The 2026 edition of the Guide to Working and Living in China as Business Expatriates has updated the list of cities where foreigners can tap their cards to pass through metro gates.
Even more convenient: after identity verification in Alipay or WeChat, you can scan a QR code to enter the station. Metro stations have clear English signage, and trains run every 2 to 4 minutes during peak hours.
High-Speed Rail β 350 km/h China Speed
China Railway's 12306 platform offers a full English-language service. Foreign travelers can purchase tickets with their passports or Foreign Permanent Resident ID Cards. Passport holders must complete identity verification through 12306 or at station counters before purchasing tickets.
All train travel requires real-name registration. You won't receive a paper ticket β your passport is your electronic boarding pass. G-series high-speed trains reach speeds of up to 350 km/h.
Bike-Sharing β The Last Mile Solution
Bike-sharing is the best way to cover the "last mile." Download Meituan or Hello Bike, register with your phone number and complete real-name verification, scan to unlock, and ride. Park in designated areas and lock the bike to end the ride. It's extremely cheap β usually 1-2 RMB per ride.
Didi β Don't Hail Taxis on the Street
In tourist areas, never hail a taxi on the street β they'll spot you're a foreigner and charge you double. Use Didi, available right inside the Alipay mini-program. It has an English interface and auto-translates messages with your driver. The fare is automatically deducted from your linked card to the cent.
Practical Tips
Save your frequently used addresses in both English and Chinese. Download a map app and cache city maps before you depart. Remember: public transport in China barely accepts cash β it's all done on your phone.
