Getting an offer is just the first step to working in China. Understanding workplace rules will save you a lot of trouble.
Work Permit β Get Paperwork Done Before You Start
Foreigners working in China must obtain a work permit and a work-type residence permit. No employer may hire a foreigner without these documents.
Work permit applications, extensions, changes, and cancellations are processed entirely online through the "Foreigners Working in China Management Service System". After entry, foreigners no longer need to obtain a physical Foreigner Work Permit card. Work permits and residence permits can be processed within a maximum of 15 working days.
Employment Contract β Read Before You Sign
Your salary must not fall below the local minimum wage. The contract must clearly state salary, job description, work location, contract term, and other key details. If the contract is in Chinese, have a trusted bilingual person review it.
Social Insurance β Mandatory
Under China's Social Insurance Law, foreigners who have signed a local employment contract with a Chinese company are, in principle, required to participate in the full social insurance scheme, including pension, medical, unemployment, work-related injury, and maternity insurance. Both employers and employees have a statutory obligation to contribute. The contribution base is typically 60%-300% of the city's average monthly wage from the previous year. China has signed social security totalization agreements with multiple countries β eligible individuals may apply for exemptions from certain contributions.
13th Month Salary and Year-End Bonus β A Chinese Tradition
The 13th month salary (year-end double pay) is not legally required but has become a widespread workplace custom. Payment depends on the employment contract or company policy.
Workplace Culture β Learn to "Read the Room"
In Chinese workplaces, hierarchy matters. Subordinates typically don't speak before their boss does. Team activities are a major part of workplace life β dinners, team-building events, and holiday celebrations β attend when possible, as these are important for building relationships. WeChat work groups are standard β responding to work messages promptly is basic professionalism.
Resignation β Give Notice
Full-time employees must give 30 days' written notice before resigning. During the probation period, 3 days' notice is sufficient.
